Questions
- How do I download subtitles from a YouTube video?
- Paste the video link above, press Get transcript, then press Download .srt (or .vtt / .txt). The file contains the captions YouTube publishes for that video, with the original timing.
- Can I download auto-generated YouTube captions?
- Yes. Auto-generated captions are listed as their own track and download like any other. In the TXT export their duplicated rollup lines are merged into readable paragraphs.
- Which format should I choose?
- SRT for video editors and desktop players, VTT for websites and HTML5 players, TXT if you want to read, quote or summarize the text.
- Why does it say the video has no captions?
- Some videos have captions turned off, or are too new for YouTube to have generated them. The Lumi extension can transcribe those videos from the audio instead.
- Where does my data go?
- Only the video link is sent to Lumi to fetch YouTube's public captions. No account; results are cached briefly so repeat lookups are fast.
The extension shows the transcript beside the player while you watch, translates it into a bilingual track, summarizes it into chapters and answers questions about it, and transcribes videos that have no captions at all.
