What you get
| Feature | Details |
|---|---|
| Readable paragraphs | Auto-captions arrive as short fragments. They are regrouped into paragraphs by pauses, with duplicate rollup lines removed. |
| Timestamps on demand | Add a [mm:ss] marker per paragraph or per line to jump back to the moment in the video. |
| Every caption language | Pick any track the video offers, including manual subtitles, auto-generated captions and YouTube's translated tracks. |
| Three export formats | TXT for notes and AI prompts, SRT for editors and players, VTT for the web. |
| No captions? | Some videos have none. The Lumi extension can transcribe those from the audio with speech recognition. |
Questions
- How do I get the transcript of a YouTube video?
- Paste the video's link above and press Get transcript. The tool reads the captions YouTube publishes for the video, removes the duplicated rollup lines of auto-captions, groups the text into paragraphs and shows it ready to copy or download. You do not need an account or to install anything.
- Does it work for videos without subtitles?
- Most YouTube videos have auto-generated captions, and those work. If a video has no captions at all, or the creator disabled them, there is nothing to fetch. The Lumi browser extension can transcribe such videos from the audio with speech recognition.
- Can I get the transcript in another language?
- Yes. After the first lookup, the caption track menu lists every language the video offers, including YouTube's automatic translations. Choosing one fetches that track.
- Is it really free? Are there limits?
- It is free with no sign-up. To keep it that way for everyone, each visitor can run a few lookups per minute; popular videos are cached so they load instantly.
- Where does my data go?
- Only the video link is sent to Lumi to fetch YouTube's public captions. No account; results are cached briefly so repeat lookups are fast.
The extension shows the transcript beside the player while you watch, translates it into a bilingual track, summarizes it into chapters and answers questions about it, and transcribes videos that have no captions at all.
